Skype

So I take back what I said yesterday about the wireless internet being the best news of the week. Somehow, I don't know how or why, but suddenly Skype is working again. The speed isn't fast enough for video, but I bet I can use it to call again, and at least to chat. This is good news.

Suddenly this small world I live in has opened up just a little bit...

Does anyone know where else in the Middle East, or in the world, Skype has been blocked, or is blocked still?? I'm interested.

Skype as a general practice is banned in Oman, I think for 2 reasons:

1 - Omantel loses a lot of money on international calls because of skype

2 - Skype to Skype calls are heavily encrypted and therefore damn near impossible for the authorities to monitor.

If you want to be able to use it, I'd suggest googling around for a VPN (virtual private network) service. This will basically open an encrypted tunnel from here to a server in a 'free' country with no internet cencorship. To the world, it would appear as if you were there, meaning you can bypass all of omantel's filters.

VPN services are usually offered in 2 flavors - PPTP and OpenVPN.

PPTP is the simpler of the two, easy to set up, usually a bit cheaper and does the trick.

I'm subscribed with an OpenVPN since I feel the security is more robust as it uses better encryption algorithms, and is far more configurable.
